Policing the Past

Heritage crime is robbing us of our history, demoralising for communities, and is costly to put right.

Cheshire West and Chester Council is working closely with Cheshire Police, Cheshire Fire and Rescue, Crown Prosecution Service and English Heritage to reduce the amount of crime that damages or interferes with the enjoyment of our monuments, historic sites and buildings.

There are many different types of crimes against our heritage, including:

  • Theft of lead and other metals from churches and other historic buildings
  • Architectural theft
  • Illegal metal detecting
  • Unlawful alteration and damage to Listed Buildings
  • Unlawful alterations to buildings in Conservation Areas
  • Damage to Monuments
  • Arson
  • Graffiti
  • Other forms of antisocial behaviour
